Las Vegas

When you live this close to Las Vegas, the chances of never once making the trek out there for a weekend of fun are slim to none. It seems like every other social media post I see is from a friend lounging by the pool of their favorite Nevada hotel, or working the slots at some brightly lit casino under the flashing lights of the pit.

​ Unfortunately, the blissed out gambling patron is never me.

​ The reason I’ve never left Los Angeles and headed east for a weekend of debauchery in Sin City is abundantly clear, however, and I have no one to blame but myself. I’m a workaholic, obsessed with climbing the business ladder of my Fortune Five Hundred company, and making it to the top of the world if it’s the last thing I do. I’m a grinder, and it’s paid of in spades, but lately all of this grind has finally started to wear me down.

​ It began subtlety enough: a missed deadline here or a botched presentation there. While I’ve always been on the ball when it comes to my job, it finally felt like the ball was slipping out from under me.

​ It took a while for me to realize exactly what the problem was, but with the weight of several massive projects on my shoulders, I finally had to face the inevitable reality of my situation. I need a vacation.

​ “Hey, I’ve got a weird question,” I say into the receiver, unexpectedly calling my friend Pete on this warm summer afternoon. It’s Friday and I’ve just gotten home from work, taking off early after my head started to throb with a dull stressful pain. I think this is the first time in my life that I’ve ever taken off before my employees.

​ “Lay it on me,” Pete says, clearly amused. Pete is the kind of guy who is always game for a little excitement, the polar opposite of my stiff and disciplined lifestyle.

​ “The next time you and the guys head to Vegas, let me know,” I tell him, “or we should plan a trip. I don’t know. I just need to get out of here.”

​ “Working Will finally needs a vacation?” Pete laughs. “I never thought I’d see the day. You know we’re not being assholes when we don’t invite you, we just had to stop because you kept saying no.”

​ “I know,” I assure my friend, understanding completely, “but now I need it. Work is just too much, I feel like I have a headache that never ends and I keep fucking things up in the weirdest ways. I need to blow off some steam.”

​ “Well, you’re in luck, my friend,” Pete announces. “Pack your bags, we’re headed to the airport in an hour for some weekend gambling.”
